5 Hottest Trends in Web Design

By Snap Agency September 28, 2013

Today, web design is better than it has ever been before. Designers are constantly striving to make sites easy to use and navigate, visual and artistic, and compatible with all viewing environments. To see what trends have been on the rise for 2013, check out our list below:

1. Fluidity on all Devices

Responsive layouts are vital when designing a website today. There are so many different ways that a website can be viewed that you want to make sure that yours is compatible with all of them. The three main ingredients for this are fluid images, dynamic image scaling, and media queries. Having this will ensure that the visitor can get the full experience on your site no matter where they are searching from- desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

2. Retina Support

With the importance of visual display on the rise, retina support is as well. This allows twice as many pixels to be fit into the same physical space and makes it so the viewer is unable to discern individual pixels at a normal viewing distance. It allows for a very sleek and crisp look with a marketing edge.

3. Infinite Scrolling and Fixed Header Bar

This is one of the latest trends on our list but it is definitely here to stay. Some of the best examples of this are Pinterest or Tumblr. These sites “load as you go” and create the feeling that there is an endless supply of information, photos, and ideas. With this form of scrolling it is now smart to have a Fixed Header Bar as well. This allows the viewer to always be able to return to the home page or navigate to another part of the site even if they have been scrolling down for hours.

4. Large Photo Background and Slider Pages

Another popular trend from the marketing standpoint is the large photo background. Doing this is visually appealing and eye-catching and sets the tone of your business for the visitor right away. Another spin on this is to have more than one large photo that can slide automatically. This is a popular strategy for websites that have multiple services or products that they want the visitor to become aware of. These work great when paired with a more simplistic navigation bar since minimalism is what’s in right now.

5. Typography and Illustration in Web Design

There is also a movement towards other types of artistic design. Typography has become a new favorite in the eyes of the visitor and graphic design can do wonders when creating a visually appealing site. If you can find a designer who can also illustrate then you have endless possibilities. You can incorporate color schemes, humor, mood, and unique movement. Having a memorable site today is very important so you do not become lost within the endless line of other sites.
