Conducting an interview with a potential web designer can sometimes be stressful when determining your goals for building a new website. There are many things that need to be covered to make sure that you are on the same page and can agree on a final product. We’ve come up with a list of questions that will be vital in the conversation to ensure a smooth process:
1. What experience do you have?
This is probably the most important question and needs to be asked first. You would never want to employ a web designer that has no experience or is trying this for the first time. Ask for case studies and for examples of what they have done in the past. Make sure that you are comfortable with what they’ve produced previously and be confident that they can make your site represent your company in the way you want them to.
2. What will your work entail?
There are so many components to building a website today that you will want to make sure you have an understanding of everything they offer. Will they research keywords for you and optimize your site for SEO? Will there be any market research involved? Who will be expected to provide the content? And how often will we need to perform maintenance? These are all things that you will want to think about on your own, and determine everything that you are looking for when shopping for a web designer.
3. How will your design help me with my goals?
Be upfront with the web designer what your goals are and what your reasoning for building a website is. Will their design set you apart from your competitors and how? Talk to them about what parts of your website you are most excited about- increasing newsletter subscribers, increase in sales, more inquires from customers etc.
4. Will it work on mobile devices, tablets, and multiple browsers?
Today it is very important that your website can be looked at from many different devices and can adapt to all viewing environments. Your visitors will most likely be searching for you in all sorts of ways so it is important to know what that will look like.
5. How much will it cost?
Of course, you also need to know how much this will be costing you. How do they plan on charging you and how do they determine the cost? Also, keep in mind that the price they provide can be a reflection of their work and experience.
